A union representing guards of Greek museums and archaeological sites have called off its announced four-hour work stoppage set for Holy Saturday, April 7.

The decision was announced by the Panhellenic Union of Employees for the Guarding of Antiquities (PEYFA) following a meeting with Culture Minister Lydia Koniordou and Deputy Culture Minister Kostas Stratis on Thursday.

The union will meet again on Friday, April 13, with the deputy minister.

PEYFA had declared the work stoppage as a protest for a number of demands, including the hiring of 200 permanent guards in the sector and the payment of a benefit.

The union’s decision to hold the work stoppage had sparked criticism from the Tourism Minister Elena Kountoura and tourism professionals.
