Transport Ministry to Launch Tender for Santorini Port Upgrade

Santorini’s port.

The Greek Transport Ministry announced on Friday that it has set aside 8.4 million euros which will be used to fund the upgrade of the Athinios port on the Cyclades island of Santorini

The central port which welcomes thousands of visitors to the island every year has been in dire need of restoration and renovation works due to functionality issues impacting the smooth operation of the remaining port facilities. The port was repaired in 2005 and handed over for use in 2010 but six years later serious damage to the docking area re-emerged.

The issue has repeatedly been tabled by local government officials as it is the port handling a large number of coastal ferries.

The transport ministry said that through its Directorate of Port Infrastructure it will announce an open tender for the execution of the project.
