Greek Capital Ready to Host 35th ‘Athens Marathon. The Authentic’
The 35th “Athens Marathon. The Authentic” will kick off in Athens on Sunday, November 12, with the participation of more 51,000 professional and amateur athletes from all over the world.
The participation rate for the 42,195-meter Marathon Race alone has reached some 18,500 runners, according to the Hellenic Athletics Federation (SEGAS).
“The Marathon belongs to the whole world,” Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis said in an announcement. “It is a great opportunity for the world to get familiar with the historic, lively, dynamic city of Athens,” he added.
The 35th “Athens Marathon. The Authentic” 42,195-meter race is set to begin at 9 am at the start venue in the town of Marathon.
The 5 km and 10 km races will begin at 7.45 am and 8.35 am, respectively, from Amalias Avenue outside the Bodosaki mansion. The Special Olympics race will begin at 8.50 am and the kids race at 10.25 am from Vassilisis Sofias avenue outside the Hellenic Parliament building. The 3 km ERGO race is scheduled to begin at 10.35 am from Vasilissis Sofias avenue outside the Ippokratio Hospital. All races will end at the Kallimarmaro Panathenaic Stadium.
“Athens Marathon. The Authentic is not just an international event. It is a 42,195-meter difficult race but also a source of values, social responsibility, environmental awareness, friendship and solidarity,” SEGAS president Kostas Panagopoulos said.
Special traffic measures will be applied along the marathon route on Saturday evening and on Sunday – the day of the event.
