Alonissos Honored as ‘Greek Destination of Environmental Sustainability’
The island of Alonissos, which is part of the North Sporades in the Aegean sea, topped the preferences of Nordic tourists as a “Greek destination of environmental sustainability”, the Alonissos Municipality said on Tuesday.
Alonissos was honored with the sustainability award following a survey conducted by Nordic tour operator Apollo Travel Group. Nordic travelers voted in favor of Alonissos based on their demographic characteristics, travel preferences and interests.
“This is an award that comes straight from the heart of travelers and constitutes the best reward for the efforts of island’s authorities, residents and the municipality to provide quality services with respect to the environment,” Alonissos Mayor Petros Vafinis said when receiving the award during a recent ceremony held on the neighboring island of Skiathos.
Alonissos has undertaken significant environmental action over the years, which includes the reduction of plastic bag use, the collection and recycling of 2,000 tires (an initiative which was recently concluded), the recycling of materials in general and the protection of the Alonissos National Marine Park, the Mediterranean’s largest marine park.
