Lesvos Day Event Explores Ways to Restore Island Image, Spur Tourism
Ways to revive tourism in the North Aegean Region and specifically on the island of Lesvos were the focus of a day event held recently in Mytilini.
The tourism ministry, regional authorities and local government agreed to work together with the private sector towards restoring the tainted image of the region and island, which has seen incoming tourism numbers decline due to the refugee influx from neighboring Turkey.
Issues discussed during the event titled “Particularities of the Tourist Product on Lesvos and in the North Aegean: Strengths and Conditions for Recovery”, included the significance of UNESCO’s recognition of Lesvos’ petrified forest; the island’s diverse tourism offerings; promotional actions to target markets; boosting domestic tourism via special programs; and increasing hospitality infrastructure.
Minister Elena Kountoura sent a message of support for the island’s recovery, which she said was a priority of the current national tourism strategy via a statement delivered by Tourism Ministry Secretary General Evrydiki Kourneta.
