Kudos Again to Greek Isle Alonissos for ‘Green’ Practices

The president of the Tourism Development and Promotion Committee of the Municipality of Alonissos, Kiki Anagnostou (R), received the award for the island’s sustainable practices from the first vice president and commercial director of Apollo Travel Group, Nina Hornewell.
The Northern Sporades island of Alonissos has yet again gained recognition for its commitment to sustainable practices and policies clinching an award during this year’s Mediterranean Panorama 2017, held recently in Stockholm.
The municipality was awarded by leading Scandinavian tour operator Apollo Travel Group for its “Alonissos without Plastic Bags” initiative aiming to eliminate the use of plastic bags and launching the use of cloth alternatives instead.
One of Greece’s ”greenest” islands, actively promoting energy-saving schemes and the habitat of the Mediterranean monk seal, Monachus monachus, Alonissos is protected under the EU’s Natura program and has repeatedly been awarded for its ongoing sustainability polices, with authorities and tourism professionals promoting it as a prime sustainable tourism destination.
It is the only Greek destination among the world’s Top 100 Sustainable Destinations – a distinction awarding efforts of international tourism locations for responsible and sustainable projects.
