Greek Airports Report 9% Rise in Passenger Traffic in January

Airports in Greece saw a significant rise in passenger traffic in January 2017, handling 1.92 million passengers travelling through their gates compared with 1.76 million in the same month last year.

According to data released on Tuesday by the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority, last month Greek airports saw a 9 percent rise in traffic compared to the same period in 2016.

The largest passenger traffic was recorded in the airports of Athens (1.2 million passengers), Thessaloniki (365,290), Heraklion (77,387), Chania (67,570) and Rhodes (55,228).

Also, according to January 2017 data, the airports with the highest rate of passenger traffic growth compared to the same month last year were those in Kasos (121 in January 2016/305 in January 2017), Paros (1,336 in January 2016/2,650 in January 2017) and Zakynthos (1,548 in January 2016/2,915 in January 2017).

The total number of flights at Greek airports amounted to 20,199 (of which 12,174 were domestic and 8.025 were international, recording an increase of 1.2 percent (-2 percent in domestic flights and +6.6% percent in international flights) compared to the same period in 2016 (19,958 flights).
