Minister Kountoura Includes Religious and Academic Tourism on Agenda in Chicago

Tourism Minister Elena Kountoura recently exchanged views with Metropolitan Iakovos of Chicago, during her official visit to the US to promote Greece in the American travel market and attract more visitors.

During their meeting, Metropolitan Iakovos assured Kountoura that he would support the efforts of the ministry for the further development of Greek tourism. Discussions centered around the promotion of religious tourism to the US market to attract more American tourists to Greece.

Minister Kountoura also visited the University of Illinois (UIC) in Chicago and attended a meeting coordinated by the university’s chancellor Michael Amiridis that included the heads of international relations of the universities of UIC, Northwestern University and DePaul University. The prospects for boosting academic tourism from the US to Greece was the main topic of discussion.

Moreover, during a special event held in her honor at the consular residence, Kountoura informed representatives of the Greek community in Chicago, officials, academics and investors that Greece is an all year round destination with many available opportunities for cooperation in the tourism sector.

While in Chicago, Kountoura gave a press conference at the Greek Consulate to expatriate media and also visited the Greek American Rehabilitation & Care Centre and the Hellenic American Academy Day School.
