Kalavryta Choo-Choo Train Back on Track

Kalavryta’s legendary locomotive, which has been a major tourist attraction for the region for decades, will again begin operations on Saturday, May 7.

The famed steam-engined train known as the “odontotos” will begin routes at 7pm on May 7, marking celebrations for its 120-year history under the motto “It Travels, It Unites, It Inspires” to be attended by Infrastructure Minister Christos Spirtzis, Alternate Tourism Minister Elena Kountoura and Kalavryta Mayor George Lazouras as well as representatives of TrainOSE.

Jointly organized by the Kalavryta Municipality, OSE, TrainOSE, the Western Greece Region and the Management Body of the Chelmos – Vouraikos geopark, the events titled “On Track: May 2016 – Odontotos Celebrations” marking the 120 years of the Kalavryta train will run through to June 6.

The train runs the historic 22km Diakofto-Kalavryta route in the northern Peloponnese, from Diakofto through the Vouraikos Gorge and the old Mega Spilaion Monastery up to the village of Kalavryta, stopping en route at Zachlorou.
