Record February for Athens International Airport
In February, Athens International Airport (AIA) reached its all-time high as its passenger traffic exceeded the 1 million mark for the first time for the specific month.
Last month, AIA served 1.07 million passengers, 18.2 percent more compared to February 2015. “It is worth noting that this record would have been achieved irrespective of the additional Leap Year day”, the airport said in announcement on Friday.
Domestic travellers demonstrated a sharp rise of 26.6 percent (450,518 from 355,944 in 2015) and international passengers also showed a double-digit increase of 12.8 percent (619,855 from 549,561 in 2015). Both Greek and foreign visitors continued their positive growth and increased their air travel by 17 percent and 21 percent respectively, AIA’s data showed.
Overall, during the first two months of this year, the airport’s passenger traffic reached 2.16 million, exceeding prior-year levels by a robust 15 percent (1.88 million in 2015).
During January-February 2016, domestic traffic enjoyed high levels of increase (+21.4 percent), almost double the international passengers’ growth (+10.8 percent). Both Greek and foreign travellers enjoyed a similar rise at the level of 14 percent and 16 percent respectively.
In the meantime, the number of flights during the first two months of 2016 amounted to 22.316, recording a significant increase of 9.3 percent, with domestic flights growing by 11.9 percent and international flights by 7.3 percent.
