SNF Announces $37 Million in Grants for Arts and Culture, Education, Health and Sports, Social Welfare

stavros_niarchos_logo_1aThe Board of Directors of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation has authorized 111 new grants totaling $37.65 million (33.29 million euros) to support non-profit organizations for programs in arts and culture, education, health and sports and social welfare.

The grants aim to support non-profit organizations whose activities are expected to have a positive and lasting impact globally and also focus on the increasing needs of Greece.

The new grants are part of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation’s international philanthropic activity and are aligned with the Foundation’s overall philosophy to support initiatives that can offer immediate assistance to citizens most in need, have the potential to bring about tangible changes and contribute to the long-term development of communities and their members.

The 111 new grants relate to the Foundation’s four basic program areas:

– Arts and Culture
Taking into consideration that Arts and Culture can play a critical role in social and economic prosperity, the foundation approved 26 new grants in this area, totaling $3.8 million (approximately 3.33 million euros), aimed at making arts further accessible to the general public, promoting Greek art abroad, supporting creative collaborations between young talented Greek and international artists, and disseminating Greek culture on a national and international level.

– Education
Recognizing the unique role of Education in strengthening personal and social development, the foundation approved 30 new grants in this area, totaling approximately $14.86 million (approximately 13.13 million euros), to support the implementation of research and educational programs, create capacity building, and provide educational institutions, both in Greece and internationally, with necessary infrastructure.

– Health and Sports
Through 25 new grants totaling $11.23 million (approximately 9.95 million euros), the foundation aims to help improve the health of citizens in need and provide much-needed medical equipment and other medical support and outreach.

– Social Welfare
With 30 new grants in the area of Social Welfare, totaling $7.75 million (approximately 6.87 million euros), the foundation supports organizations working to combat poverty, to assist vulnerable social groups and to enhance innovative social programs and initiatives.

The new grants are in line with the regular grant making activity of the SNF.

A number of these grants are part of the 2nd cycle of the Initiative Against the Greek Crisis, and the Recharging the Youth program, which, respectfully, aim help to alleviate the severe consequences of the socio-economic crisis in Greece, and create opportunities for future generations.
