Greece’s Domestic Travel Shows Increase in 2014

domestic_tourism_IMG_0185_1More Greeks travelled in their own country last year, the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) announced on Wednesday.

According to data from an ELSTAT survey on the qualitative characteristics of resident tourists, some 6.3 million trips took place in Greece by some 3.6 million Greek citizens in 2014, which is an annual increase of 13.4 percent and 15.9 percent respectively.

The stats of the 2014 vacation survey showed that some 64 million domestic overnight trips were made by Greeks last year, up 8.8 percent from 2013’s figure.

On the other hand, the overnight spend of domestic tourists showed an annual increase of only 7.2 percent to some 1.8 billion euros as the majority of Greek travelers preferred to stay in non-rented accommodation.

Travel for personal purposes accounted for 94.3 percent of domestic trips last year, which showed a significant increase of 15.7 percent over 2013. Business travel related purposes accounted for 5.7 percent of domestic travel in 2013.

The data from ELSTAT also revealed that in 2014 most trips for personal purposes were made by road and sea.
