Athens Airport Passenger Figures Soar to New Heights

Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos” is marking its best season ever, handling over 6 million passengers in the first five months of the year, up be 23.7 percent.

According to data released by the airport, in May alone a total of 1.65 million passengers passed through its gates, up by 22.3 percent compared to the same period last year, with domestic travelers marking a 20 percent rise and international travelers a 28 percent increase. Passenger traffic, meanwhile, rose by 28.2 percent domestically and 22.4 percent on an international level.

At the same time, the number of flights increased by 17.1 percent to 61,950 in the first five months of this year compared to the same period in 2014. In May, the number of flights increased by 16.8 percent compared to the same month last year with domestic traffic up by 9.4 percent and incoming traffic up by 22.8 percent.

This has been the best year for the airport since it first opened, ahead of 2008 with 5,961 million passengers and 2007 with 5,849 million passengers.

The poorest figures were recorded in 2002 with 4,150 million and in 2013 with 4,268 million passengers.
