Greece Takes Part in ‘European Clean-up Day’ Campaign

Lets-Cleanup-Europe_2015_ENGLISHThere are just a few days left until European Clean-up Day, which will run May 8-10!

European Clean-up Day is a Europe-wide annual clean-up day coordinated by the European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR) in order to reduce littering in nature and give visibility to the issue.

Greece is participating!

Over 4,500 volunteers of all ages throughout Greece have already registered their action (beach, underwater and forest clean-ups) with the Hellenic Marine Environment Protection Association (HELMEPA), the coordinator for the European Clean-up Day in Greece. These locations are across 50 coastal and mountain areas, displayed on the campaign’s e-map.

Clean-up_MapLast year, some 5,000 volunteers participated in the event.

HELMEPA invites all to give a helping hand by organizing their own beach, lake, river or even forest, park or neighbourhood clean-up.

Main steps to organize your clean-up action

Before the action, identify a place to clean and register your action by completing the e-form found here.

Clean_Up_EuropeHELMEPA will then e-mail volunteers with necessary instructions and supporting material (campaign logo and litter recording/observation data sheets).

The clean-up activity will be entered into the database and announced on HELMEPA’s Facebook page so that others who are interested may learn about the various goings-on as part of the campaign in Greece.

After the clean-up, HELMEPA invites volunteers to send feedback such as photos and completed litter recording/observation data sheets. The data sheets significantly contribute to scientific research on combating pollution.

For further information and/or to receive a copy of the printed registration form, contact HELMEPA’s Environmental Awareness Sector on 210.9343088 or by e-mail at environment@helmepa.gr.
