Greece is setting its sights on becoming a strong medical tourism destination and sector professionals expressed their confidence on Wednesday, that this is possible with the modernization of Greek hospitals, reforms to the institutional framework, improved cooperation between private insurance providers and hospitals and cooperation with international tour operators.

These issues will be discussed during the International Health Tourism Convention (IHTC) to take place in March 11-14 at the Royal Olympic Hotel in central Athens.

Under the motto “Knowledge, Policy, Strategy and Action”, the convention brings together international sector experts and professionals in efforts to address pressing issues while endorsing policies and strategies that will ensure the best utilization of the country’s medical enterprise.

“We aim to promote areas that have a significant potential and in which we have the medical knowhow and infrastructure,” Zacharias Kaplanidis, president and CEO of organizers Zita Group said during the press conference ahead of the event.

Already active in aesthetic surgery (cosmetic dentistry, plastic surgery), IVF and spa tourism, Greece aims to tap into geriatric tourism and assisted tourist residence abroad.

Other issues to be addressed during the four-day event include macro-economic policies and strategies, entrepreneurship in health tourism, destinations, investment, assisted residential tourism (retirement housing and care abroad), as well as innovation.

Suppliers and buyers active in medical, dental, spa, wellness, sports, culinary, accessible and assisted residential tourism will be attending.

Organized by healthCare cybernetics and Zita Medical Management, the event will include seminars, workshops, forums and the Health Tourism Innovation Awards Ceremony.
