Greece Hotel Rates Rise Up to 11% for Carnival
Greek hotels have increased their prices ahead of the Carnival season, according to trivago.com’s pricing index released earlier this week.
Topping the list of trivago’s Greece destination choices for the three-day carnival weekend on February 21-23 were Xanthi, Patra and Rethymno, where major carnival activities are already underway.
Athens and Thessaloniki also were among Greek travelers’ preferences.
According to trivago’s hotel price index (tHPI), hotel prices in Greece rose by 11 percent compared to 2014. The biggest increase was in Metsovo, northern Greece, where prices soared by 28 percent to 78 euros per night compared to 61 euros last February. Carnival favorite, Xanthi also showed in increase in prices at 74 euros compared to 62 euros last year. Delphi was an exception, where prices dropped by 7 percent to 65 euros compared to 70 euros last year.
Greeks opted for nearby destinations outside Greece with Rome topping the list, Bansko in Bulgaria and Istanbul in neighboring Turkey.
