Crete’s Gastronomy As A Catalyst For Economic Growth

Crete’s local products could lead the way to develop culinary tourism and wine tourism and thus attract more tourists to the popular island, according to Greek Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni.

Speaking during the recent inauguration ceremony of the 3rd Cretan Diet Festival, Mrs. Kefalogianni referred to the importance of developing Cretan gastronomy to serve as a catalyst for economic growth (local and national).

The 3rd Cretan Diet Festival is taking place at the Municipal Garden in Rethymno and will run until 5 July.

More into her speech, the tourism minister assured that the Tourism Ministry and the Greek National Tourism Organization will always support such efforts that promote the beneficial connection of the primary sector and tourism, a connection sure to boost the Greek tourism and culture product.

3rd Cretan Diet Festival

The 3rd Cretan Diet Festival is organized by the Municipality of Rethymno, the Region of Crete – Regional Unit of Rethymno and the Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

The festival’s program of events includes an exhibition of local products, wine tasting, folk dance and music performances and various informative and cultural activities.

Guests at the festival will learn about the high nutritional value of the displayed local products and discover many secrets of the traditional Cretan cuisine.

“We invite you to actively take part in the Cretan Diet Festival, the event which brings out the seeds, the colors, the smells and the sounds of real Crete and its cultural heritage,” Mayor of Rethymno George Marinakis said in his welcome greeting.
