Greek Poems On London Underground
Six poems by Greek, British and Irish poets will be posted in London Underground cars from 24 February 2014 until early April in honor of the Greek EU Presidency.
Verses extolling the virtues of love and the wondrous nature, myths and history, will appear in bilingual form of poems by Sappho, Constantine Cavafy (“Ionian Song”), Nikos Gatsos (Extract from Amorgos), along with poems in English by Byron (“The isles of Greece”), Keats (“On Chapman’s Homer”), and the Irish poet and translator Theo Dorgan (“Bread Dipped in Olive Oil and Salt”).
The event is part of the activities for the Greek EU Presidency, in cooperation with the Greek Embassy in London and the Hellenic Foundation for Culture.
“Poems on the Underground” is supported by Transport for London, Arts Council England and the British Council.
