Pelion Train To Continue Service During The Winter
Pelion’s steam train, the legendary so-called “Moutzouris,”will continue to run this winter for organized groups and holidaymakers following an increase in passenger traffic during the summer season. The train usually suspends service in late October and resumes from mid-April (during July and August the service runs everyday).
According to TRAINOSE, during March-August 2013, Pelion’s train saw a 28 percent increase both in passengers and revenue compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.
Also, the average number of passengers per route increased by 19 percent over the previous year and the leasing of the train by organized groups of visitors grew by 42 percent.
The steam train of Pelion is considered a monument of cultural heritage in Magnesia, one that contributes to the area’s tourism development. “Moutzouris” is a great example of an alternative form of tourism in Greece generally.
Milies-Vizitsa: Station of Architecture and Tastes
In addition, the Region of Thessaly recently announced that the train station in Milies will be one of the main attractions of the recently launched pilot initiative entitled Milies-Vizitsa: Station of Architecture and Tastes.
The Region of Thessaly aims to upgrade the train station and extend its operation all year around.
“Moutzouris” departs from Ano Lehonia and travels some 20 miles through beautiful terrain before it arrives at Milies village in Pelion.
