IOBE Study Highlights Tourism’s Contribution To Greek Labor Force
The development of tourism in Greece supports a total of 741,000 jobs, according to a recent study released by the Foundation for Economic and Industrial Research (IOBE). Out of that total, 311,000 jobs are directly related to the tourism sector.
IOBE’s estimate represents eight percent of Greece’s employment sector.
According to the results of the study, for every 100 jobs directly related to tourism, a total of 130 other jobs are supported within sectors that are main suppliers for tourism businesses.
In the accommodation services sector, hotels hold the majority of work positions (92 percent) while the number of workers in campsites and other accommodation, such as rooms-to-let, add up to some 5,000. Employment positions in the Greek accommodation services sector stood at 64,000 in 2011.
The study underlined that in accordance to the estimate of the “Employees per bed” indicator, the total amount of job positions the hospitality industry could provide throughout the summer, add up to 208,000.
IOBE added that the strengthening of the tourism demand beyond the summer months would boost employment in the country and increase employer contributions.
