Diving Festival Kicks Off This Month On Kalymnos

Kalymnos, the sponge diver’s island in the Dodekanissos complex, will become the meeting point for free diving fans this month.

The Kalymnos Diving Festival, to be held 18-24 July, commemorates those that perished harvesting sponges at sea.

During the festival visitors will become familiar with sponge-diving methods (deep-sea helmet, fernez, modern) and can attend or participate in the Skandalopetra Freediving Games 20-24 July.

Skandalopetra (bell-stone) was the equipment sponge divers used since ancient times to dive great depths (40-60 meters) and collect sponges. This method reappears with the Skandalopetra Freediving Games in memory of the brave islanders. Photo courtesy of skandalopetra.com
