The Organization for Rhodian Tourism Promotion (PROTOUR) recently announced it would follow the example of international destinations and attempt to develop health tourism on the island and form a lucrative new source of revenue for Rodos.
PROTOUR will launch a pilot plan that includes services for dialysis, cosmetic dentistry, plastic surgery and hair implantation in cooperation with specialized clinics or private practices, press reports said.
According to the organization’s pilot plan, tourists that receive medical services will be eligible to stay at one of the four selected hotels on the island for recovery. Each hotel is designed to accommodate visitors according to the nature of medical services they have received.
Hoteliers will have to form a special area within the hotel units for recovering patients that will receive visits by doctors after surgery.
According to the Greek press, the discussion of including health tourism within Greece’s tourism portfolio has been in process for some 15 years without a specific legislative plan for its development.
