Conference Tourism Committee Coming Soon
The Culture and Tourism Ministry last month announced its intention to establish a Conference Tourism Committee in an effort to promote Greece in international tourism markets as a meetings and convention destination.
“Greece has great potential to develop conference tourism taking into account the country’s Olympic Games heritage, which until now has not been developed,” said Deputy Culture and Tourism Minister Angela Gerekou.
Once established, the committee would examine the current framework and give insight on what is needed for the rational and efficient development of conference tourism-a form of tourism that would largely contribute to the season’s expansion.
Mrs. Gerekou underlined Greek conference tourism’s main problem, which is the significant delay in the transformation of the TaeKwonDo Olympic venue in Palio Faliro into a conference center.
“This is the ministry’s top priority and already we are in the process of retracting the initial tenders in order to unblock the process,” she said.
The Conference Tourism Committee, once established, will see to the creation of a conference registry and implement a more targeted promotion of the product.
According to the Culture and Tourism ministry, the committee will offer services without pay and operate with the ministry’s support.
