Cruise Ships Request Anchorage at Faliriko Delta
The Association of Passenger Ship Owners recently requested the development of port infrastructure for cruise ships in the area between the Peace and Friendship Stadium and Faliriko Delta.
The then president of the association, Pericles Panagopoulos (recently turned the chair over to Markos Foros), said the implementation of the project will have positive results on the cruise industry.
“The site between the Peace and Friendship Stadium and Faliriko Delta would directly serve cruise ships and thousands of tourists as they would gain direct access to the sights of Athens and the airport without delay,” Mr. Panagopoulos said.
Mr. Panagopoulos said that the development of port infrastructure at the specific site would relieve the city’s main port in Piraeus, as well as the municipality in general, from the circulation of hundreds of coaches that are obliged to transport tourists to and from the port.
He also stressed that the environment will benefit as the pollution caused by the very slow movement of the vehicles in the city of Piraeus will be reduced.
The association’s former president added that if the project proceeds at Faliriko Delta the congestion at entrances and exits of the port, which currently cause major delays, will be solved as well.
According to Mr. Panagopoulos, sometimes the delays exceed two hours, especially with the morning arrivals, which sometimes results in passengers missing their flights.
