Modernization Works For Thessaloniki’s Macedonia Airport

Plans for new installations at Thessaloniki’s Macedonia airport, budgeted at 100 billion drachmas, are expected to be ready for tender by next year, the Public Works Ministry announced last month. Also planned is the installation of the ILS-II landing system that has been subjected to long delays.

At a meeting of the Central Macedonia Region Authorities, it was announced that the ILS-II guidance system would be fully operational at some time within the coming winter, reducing to a great extent the problems caused by fog that resulted in about 400 flights being canceled between 1993-2000.

Already 20 billion drachmas have been spent on refurbishing and improving the airport, installing a skid-free surface on runway 10/28, a radar tower and other improvements.
