Environment Takes Front Seat At Tourism Meet
The Hellenic Tourism Organization‘s secretary general, Evgenios Yiannakopoulos, called the country’s environment and animal protection organizations and associations to a meeting recently. He wanted their thoughts on how they and the tourism sector could best cooperate within the area of the environment in general.
Discussions centered on environment education for all tourism executives, the development of eco tourism, the promotion of the country’s remarkable ecosystems through the production of pamphlets, and the sensibility and activation of tourism enterprises, regional authorities and local authorities on the importance of the environment to tourism.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Mr. Yiannakopoulos suggested the creation of an analytical action plan by a work group made up of Hellenic Tourism Organization executives and members from the various environment associations and organizations.
As part of the program, he suggested two-day meetings and cooperation for ad hoc subjects.
Represented at the meeting were environmental organizations, such as:
WWF Hellas, the Hellenic Society for the Protection of the Environment and Political Heritage, the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature, the Hellenic Ornithology Society, and the Association for the Protection of Sea Turtles.
