Kountoura Runs for Tourism at 35th ‘Athens Marathon. The Authentic’

With the message “Run for Tourism” printed on her t-shirt, Greek Tourism Minister Elena Kountoura led the running team of the Tourism Ministry and the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO) in the 5-kilometer race of the 35th “Athens Marathon. Τhe Authentic” on Sunday, November 12.

“For many years, the GNTO has been supporting the Athens Marathon event, which promotes Greece, sports and tourism worldwide. This year’s event has recorded record numbers in the participation of Greek and foreign athletes, as well as high tourist traffic in Athens,” an announcement by the tourism ministry said.

The Tourism Ministry-GNTO running team included Tourism Minister Elena Kountoura, General Secretary of Tourism Policy and Development Giorgos Tzillas, General Secretary of Tourism Evridiki Kourneta, GNTO Secretary General Konstantinos Tsegas, GNTO President Charalambos Karimalis, GNTO Vice-President Angeliki Chondromatidou, and staff members.

Also “running for tourism” were South Aegean Governor George Chatzimarkos, South Aegean Deputy Governor Marietta Papavassiliou and tourism professionals such as Achilleas Konstantakopoulos (TEMES), Alexandros Angelopoulos (Aldemar Hotels) and Michalis Mavropoulos (TUI Greece). Greek basketball champion Panagiotis Fasoulas also participated.

Minister Kountoura awarded the first winner of the 35th Marathon’s original course of 42,195 meters, Kenyan runner Samuel Kalalei.

In statements to the press, she congratulated runners, volunteers and the Hellenic Athletics Federation (SEGAS) for organizing an “excellent” marathon.

“The Athens Marathon is a big celebration that promotes sports, tourism and our country internationally,” Minister Kountoura said.

The 35th “Athens Marathon. Τhe Authentic” was organized in cooperation with the Region of Attica, the City of Athens and the Municipality of Marathon.
