Greek thematic tourism projects are to receive funding through the EU’s Interreg V (Greece-Cyprus 2014-2020) program, the Tourism Ministry announced on Wednesday
According to the ministry, projects selected for funding are: a star-gazing program as well as the development and promotion of East Mediterranean geoparks to be supported with 2.96 million euros and a project to promote cultural and natural heritage through religious tourism in Greece and Cyprus to be granted 2.74 million euros. The Greek areas involved in the project are the Aegean islands and Crete.
The above ventures will be implemented with the collaboration of the Greek tourism ministry, the Cypriot ministry of agriculture, rural development and environment, the University of Cyprus, the Cyprus Tourism Organization, the Site Municipality, the Church of Greece and the University of the Aegean.
In efforts to secure additional funding for tourism-related projects, Tourism Minister Elena Kountoura has managed for the first time to ensure the ministry’s participation in an Interreg program as a project partner.
Interreg V for the 2014-2020 period has a budget of 10.1 billion euros.
