Greek and foreign holidaymakers are leaving the capital, as they are heading to the islands to spend their summer vacations, ahead of the Greek public holiday of August 15.

According to media reports thousands of people are expected to travel today and during the next few days from Attica’s main ports of Piraeus, Rafina and Lavrio to the islands of the Saronic Gulf, the Dodecanese, Crete and the Cyclades.

A total of 26 ferries are expected to sail on Friday from the port of Piraeus, 18 ferries from the Rafina port and seven ferries from the port of Lavrio.

Approximately 23,700 passengers sailed from the port of Piraeus on Thursday, some 6,000 passengers from Rafina and 1,250 passengers from Lavrio.

Tourism officials advise travelers to be at the port at least one hour prior to their departure.

Furthermore, 170 additional KTEL intercity bus routes have been scheduled from Athens to all destinations in Greece until Monday August 14 and are expected to carry more than 45,000 travelers.
