Runners to Discover Andros’ Unique Identity at 2017 Trail Race Event

The organizers of the second Andros Trail Race are inviting all to take part in the mountain running race and come to experience the historical and cultural heritage of the Cycladic island.

Organized by Trekking Andros & Outdoor Activities along with Andros Koinsep, the Municipality of Andros and the South Aegean Region, the Andros Trail Race is one of the biggest sports events on Andros.

“This is a race that challenges, excites, reveals and combines all cultural elements that characterize Andros and consist its unique identity,” the organizers say.

The event is considered a challenging race for the Cyclades since it combines not only different elevation gain with racing field alterations, but also the fact that athletes run in old traditional trails which set the racing routes.

“But this is what makes the Andros Trail Race so different and exciting,” the organizers say, adding that running on the first island in Europe to be recognized by the European Ramblers Association and certified as one of the “Leading Quality Trails – Best of Europe” is a unique experience.

Following the first successful Andros Trail Race in 2016, the second race will take place on October 1, 2017. The two-day event this year will include additional routes, a 5km city trail and a 1km children’s race.

The main races of 24km and 10km will take place on Sunday, October 1, in Korthi Bay area and the surrounding villages.

During the Andros Trail Race, each athlete has the chance to run through traditional and picturesque villages, cobbled roads, stone threshing floors, impressive dry stone-walls (xerolithies), wind and water mills and stone bridges consisting a beautiful environment and landscape. The Venetian castle of Faneromeni, the castle-like monastery of Panachrandou, the dovecotes in Korthi and the panoramic view will impress all runners.

Each athlete will receive commemorative medals and T-shirts and the winners will receive unique prizes handcrafted by local artist, designed exclusively for this event.
