Transport in Greece to be Affected by Walkouts, Strikes on May 16-17

Public transport in Athens will be disrupted on Tuesday, May 16 and Wednesday, May 17, due to nationwide protests against an austerity vote in Parliament on Thursday.

Workers of OASA buses in Athens have announced work stoppages on Tuesday (from 11 am to 4 pm). On Wednesday and Thursday buses will run only from 9 am to 9 pm.

Moreover, on Wednesday the country’s main private and public sector umbrella unions, GSEE and ADEDY, have announced a nationwide 24-hour strike, which will see the participation of workers from different sectors.

On Wednesday, the ISAP electric railway and the Athens metro will both be in service only from 9am until 4pm, while ILPAP trolley-buses will only run from 9am until 8:30pm

Trains of the Hellenic Railways Organization (OSE) will also not be running for 24 hours so there will be no services on the suburban railway (Proastiakos) and TRAINOSE routes from midnight Tuesday until midnight Wednesday. As a result, itineraries on the Athens – Thessaloniki route scheduled to depart at midnight on May 16 will be cancelled and metro line 3 (blue line) will operate only until Doukisis Plakendias station. There will be no metro service to Athens International Airport.

Air traffic controllers have also announced a work stoppage on Wednesday between noon and 3 pm that will lead to flight cancellations and reschedules. Travellers are advised to contact their travel agents or the airline companies.

Moreover, all passenger ferries will remain docked across Greece on Tuesday and Wednesday due to an announced 24-hour strike by the Pan-Hellenic Seamen’s Federation (PNO).

Also, on Tuesday OSE workers have announced a work stoppage from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm that will affect services on the suburban railway (Proastiakos), TRAINOSE routes and the metro on the Doukisis Plakendias – Athens International Airport section. The work stoppage is being held out of respect for the victims of the derailment of an intercity train in northern Greece late Saturday.
