Tourists from neighboring Bulgaria are increasing in numbers in the Eastern Macedonia & Thrace Region, according to data provided by local tour operators.

The latest booking figures reveal that the number of Bulgarian travelers planning to visit the region has risen by 10 percent compared to 2016, with increasing interest for spring.

Sector professionals are attributing the positive trend to the strong bilateral ties, common investments and community level sharing as well as to a Eastern Macedonia & Thrace Region promotional campaign which was launched last year.

Regional authorities are also aiming to attract investment interest from Bulgarian buyers in efforts to boost the local economy. Bulgarian travelers prefer leasing out private villas along the coastal zone for accommodation.

Meanwhile, insiders expect tourism to the region to pick up pace in the coming months, citing increased pre-bookings as well as the addition of new airline routes to the Megas Alexandros Airport in Kavala.

The Eastern Macedonia & Thrace Region consists of the cities of Alexandroupolis, Komotini, Kavala, Xanthi, Drama and the islands of Thasos (or Thassos) and Samothrace.
