Key Tourism Figures 2016: Alexandros Vassilikos, President Athens – Attica & Argosaronic Hotel Association

Alexandros VassilikosOfficial Tourism Message

Athens tourism went beyond the traditional city destination model by offering infinite and unique experiences to visitors from around the world. There is no doubt that the habits of travelers change and new elements define their choices. The Athens-Attica & Argosaronic Hotel Association in cooperation with key tourism sector bodies has been taking actions and initiatives for 6 consecutive years focused on the prosperity of our destination’s image and product.

Official numbers of our visitors’ satisfaction (over 96% for more than 4 years) show that we are on the right track and that, keeping up with travelers needs, it is a crucial element of our efforts as an association of hoteliers.

Although tourist arrival numbers are better than last year we don’t consider this as a success indicator, as we think quality and growth are factors of success especially in our destination, Athens, with so many aspects still to unfold.

2016 was not an easy-going year for tourism in Europe. We face new challenges which need different approaches not only by each destination alone but from the European tourism sector as a whole. Sharing economy (or shadow economy, as we think is a more suitable description) as a growing trend and economic and political instability affect us all, tourism businesses and travelers.

Athens tourism is always on the move. New hotels opened in the city center and many of the existing units are going under a major refurbishment; meeting with cutting edge evolution in digital technology, eco-hospitality and accessible tourism.

2017 will be another year of challenges for Europe. Athens tourism has the quality of a marathon runner: it comes a long way from the past, bearing authenticity, aiming high, exploring new paths of strength.

We invite you to join us and explore the Athens Authentic experience.
