Athens Airport Passenger Traffic Soars in September
Passenger traffic numbers continued to reach new highs at Athens International Airport (AIA) in September.
According to data, passenger traffic at AIA in September substantially exceeded the respective 2015 levels by 14.6 percent, amounting to 2.13 million passengers.
Both domestic and international passengers demonstrated a strong increase of 14 percent and 15 percent respectively. The development was driven by the robust increase of both Greek residents and foreign visitors by 17 percent and 15 percent respectively.
Overall, during the January through September 2016 period, the airport’s passenger traffic reached 15.6 million corresponding to an increase of 10.2 percent vs. the same period in 2015, with domestic passengers growing by 12.4 percent and international travellers by 8.9 percent. Both Greek and foreign travellers enjoyed an increase at the level of 15 percent and 8 percent respectively.
In addition, the number of flights to Athens Airport during the first nine months of the year reached 148,815, recording an increase of 8.1 percent. Both domestic flights and international flights rose at similar levels of 7.9 percent and 8.2 percent, respectively.
