Piraeus Port Gets New Cruise Terminal, Inauguration Set for October 3
A new cruise terminal at Agios Nikolaos in Piraeus Port will be inaugurated on Monday, October 3.
The terminal was completed by Chinese shipping giant Cosco that is taking over the management of the port.
Τhe project had been delayed for four years under the previous management of the Piraeus Port Authority (OLP).
Works for the terminal resumed in early July with funds from the EU’s National Strategic Reference Framework (NSRF) fund and OLP revenues. The project was completed on September 20.
The new cruise ship pier is shaped like a triad and is expected to service the most modern vessels in the seas.
According to the Athens News Agency, the financing of another planned major project for the extension of the cruise terminal in the south section of Piraeus port will continue as normal in all phases, even though Cosco has taken over management of the port. The project’s budget is at 135 million euros and 90 percent funding will be from European programmes.
Cosco Group Board Chairman and Party Secretary Xu Lirong and Greek Alternate Tourism Minister Elena Kountoura will attend the new cruise terminal’s inauguration ceremony on Monday.
