Thailand Rocked by Explosions, UNWTO Condemns Attacks

flag_ThailandThe United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) on Friday strongly condemned the attacks perpetrated in Thailand.

A number of areas in Thailand were hit by over 10 bombings in less than a day. At least four people were killed and about 34 injured, including tourists.

According to CNN, the first explosion occurred on Thursday afternoon in Trang province and two bombs went off that evening in the resort city of Hua Hin.

On Friday morning at least eight explosions occurred in five provinces. Bombs went off again in Hua Hin, in Surat Thani, Trang province, Phang-nga province and the resort island of Phuket, hitting Patong Beach and Bang La Street — both popular tourist sites. Two explosions also occurred in Surat Thani city and two bombs followed in the Bang Miang market in Phang-nga province.

On behalf of the international tourism community, the UNWTO conveyed its condolences and sympathy to the families and friends of the victims and to the Thai people.

“Thailand is one of the most consolidated tourism destination in the world. A destination where people of all cultures unite and enjoy tourism and its strong potential to foster development. We are fully confident that this will continue to be the case and we look forward to meet in Bangkok next 27 September for the official World Tourism Day celebrations”, said UNWTO Secretary-General, Taleb Rifai.

The series of blasts come days before the one year anniversary of the Erawan Shrine bombing, which killed 20 people.

“More than ever we need to work together to make a great success out of the celebrations of World Tourism Day, this will be the best expression of support and union against these hideous acts”, Rifai added.
