An Avant-garde Take @ Syros Int’l Film Fest this Week
Alternative, art, avant-garde, B movies, burlesque, comedy, film noir, foreign or independent are just some of the film genres to be screened at this year’s Syros International Film Festival (SIFF), which kicks off tomorrow (July 28) in the capital Hermoupolis and runs through to August 1.
The annual event aims to promote experimental film productions underrepresented at mainstream festivals as well as Greek and regional works while offering lovers of the art a ground of exchange and support.
SIFF organizers also wish to bring Syros and its offerings into the spotlight by hosting screenings, parallel events and workshops at several landmark venues around the island in collaboration with local groups.
Individual tickets at 3 euros and general passes at 15 euros are on sale at the SIFF kiosk on Miaouli Square in the center of Hermoupolis. Screenings will take place at the Pallas indoor and open-are cinemas, the Apollo Municipal Theater, and at the De La Grazia drive-in.
Workshops, talks, a tribute to the late innovator Tony Conrad, masterclasses with experimental filmmaker Péter Lichter and director/publisher Pip Chodorov and much more are in store for film buffs.
