Three Beaches in Greece Lose Blue Flag Status

Blue_Flag_IMG_4046Three of Greece’s beaches have been stripped of their coveted Blue Flag status for 2015.

Kakia Lagada Coast (Municipality of Kythira) in Attiki, Kalo Nero Coast (Municipality of Trifylia) in Messinia and Nea Chora Coast (Municipality of Chania) in Chania were all dropped from the 2015 Blue Flag list and lost the international award, it has been announced.

According to the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature, inspections during the summer revealed that the three beaches did not fulfill the imperative criteria required to maintain Blue Flag status.

Members of the program’s organizing committee found that although the beaches had clean waters, they had serious deficiencies in the provision of services to bathers. Meanwhile, the beaches did not meet criteria relating to cleanliness, safety measures for bathers, and environment and coastal area protection.

The three beaches are now banned from the 2016 award process.
