Athens International Airport: January-April Sees Rise in Passenger Numbers
Athens International Airport (AIA) saw a big increase in passenger volume during the first four months of the year, according to figures released on Monday.
Some 4.4 million passengers came through the airport during January-April, up 24.2 percent from 2014.
The data revealed that both domestic and international traffic produced high growth rates of 30.5 percent and 20.7 percent respectively, during the first four months of the year. Greek travelers increased by 21 percent, while foreign visitors recorded an increase of 28 percent.
In April alone, passenger traffic at Athens Airport reached 1.46 million, up 21.1 percent compared with the same month last year. The number of foreign passengers increased by 22.8 percent to 948,914 compared with April 2014 (772.602), which shows the airport’s enhanced international network for this summer season.
Growth driven by domestic passengers showed an 18 percent increase over April 2013, while overall the number of Greek travelers were up by 16 percent and foreign visitors recorded an increase of 25 percent.
Also during April, the number of flights at Athens Airport increased by 17.6 percent compared to the same period last year.
