Greece’s Mount Athos Region Does More to Attract British Tourists
A World Heritage site, Mount Athos and its surrounding region offer visitors to Greece a unique experience. In efforts to attract even more tourists to the Chalkidiki peninsula in northern Greece, the Mount Athos Area Organization arranged meetings with major tourist industry players on the sidelines of the World Travel Market (WTM) in London earlier this month.
The culture, cuisine and natural habitat that make the Athos region a prime tourist destination were presented during the “Meet the Experts” event organized by tour operator Sunvil at the WTM.
Social media and special events make up the core of the organization’s 2015 strategy for the promotion of the region, with particular emphasis on the UK market.
A series of B2B meetings as well as talks with social media experts led to the finalization of a fam trip next May to focus on alternative activities in the region, the promotion of the region via social media and travel-related blogs and the organization of special events such as the month-long “Mount Athos Area Kouzina”, which kicks off on 15 May, featuring Athos culinary traditions as well as innovative dishes using local products.
