An abandoned building on Mitropoleos Street, near Syntagma Square in central Athens, that once housed the Greek Education Ministry, will be transformed into a hotel.

According to press reports, the Electra Hotels & Resorts emerged as the winner in a tender conducted by the Church of Greece regarding the leasing of the building.

The six-story building will be leased to Electra Hotels for some 40 years, with the option of an extension.

The hotel group, which runs two other hotels near Syntagma Square, has filed a plan to convert the building into a four- or five-star hotel. Renovation works may take up to three years.

The ground floor of the building is home to a Byzantine church of the 16th century, which is said to be of great historical value.
