“The further development of tourism can create jobs, especially for young ages,” Greek Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni said at a conference organized by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation in New York City on 3 April.

The conference focused on the strengthening of youth employment and combating unemployment in Greece, with emphasis in the areas of tourism and agriculture.

During her speech, Mrs. Kefalogianni said social cohesion was essential for Greece’s economy to move forward again.

“We must make use of every tool we have in our hands and the development of tourism could well be the strongest of them all,” she said.

When referring to Greece’s action plan for tourism, she said that the country does not only invest in its beauties but also in the development of thematic tourism and the promotion of culture.

The conference was attended by Professor Jeffrey Sachs, Columbia University; Professor Konstantinos Meghir, Yale University; Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser, United Nations High Representative for the Alliance of Civilizations; Athanasios Tsaftaris, Greek Minister of Rural Development and Food; and Andreas Drakopoulos, chairman of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation.
