Power Cut Hits Santorini Island
Santorini – one of Greece’s most popular holiday destinations – was literally left in the dark on Tuesday noon, 13 August, due to a fire at a power station that cut electricity to the entire island.
According to reports, no injuries were reported from the blaze, which was put out the same day. Efforts are in process to fully restore supplies.
The power cut also caused a partly interruption to the island’s water supply as the desalination plant on the island could not operate.
Anastassios Nikolaos Zorzos, mayor of the island’s capital city Thera, reported that the number of tourists visiting the island this year is expected to exceed last year’s 1.6 million tourists.
Oia on Santorini was recently included in CNN’s ranking of the 12 superb sunset spots around the world.
