Greece Denies Plans To Isolate Rowdy Tourists
Greek tourism officials have denied that certain Greek party destinations are planning “special zones” as a way to solve problems caused by intoxicated tourists.
This comes after reports recently surfaced, fueled by Malia Mayor Zacharias Doxastakis, that the mayors of the party resorts on Zakynthos, Crete, Corfu, Rhodes and Kos were considering to create special zones for rowdy holidaymakers that would be located away from each islands town.
However, Alexandros Konstantinou, from the GNTO in the UK, told British TravelMail that the plans cited by the mayor of Malia “reflects on personal opinions of the locals, which do not represent official statements as well as positions of the Greek hoteliers, in total.”
The idea of Mayor Doxastakis came after the recent murder of a British tourist in Malia during a brawl with other British holidaymakers.
It is no secret that the locals in the Greek party destinations in question are fed up with the bad behavior of alcohol-fuelled tourists (usually British).
However, Mr. Konstantinou told TravelMail that of the 3.5million overnight stays in Crete, there are statistically very few major incidents.
He also reassured young holidaymakers that police work very hard to keep the nightlife of Malia under control.
An awareness campaign has also been launched by the British Consulate, UK tour operators and the tourist authorities for the region. The campaign explains to visitors how to stay safe and avoid excess during holiday.
