Acropolis Museum Among The World’s Best
The Acropolis Museum in Athens was placed in the third place on a list of the best 50 museums in the world after the Smithsonian Museum in Washington and the British Museum in London, according to the UK’s Sunday Times newspaper.
In a four-page spread, the Sunday Times recently published the “World’s 50 Best Museums” list based on expert opinions. The experts were asked to talk about their favorite museums around the world.
“The Acropolis Museum, a shiny new home for the host of the most important legacies of classical civilization, is located on the ancient road that leads to the Holy Rock, on which the majestic Parthenon rises above Athens. Hundreds of thousands of visitors arrive every year to watch the cultural wonders of a glorious past, which stand flooded with natural light, having the admirable view of the original temple as its evocative background,” the newspaper said.
Detached fragments of the Parthenon sculptures are displayed in British Museum in London. The issue is deeply controversial and the Greek government has requested that they be repatriated. However, the British Museum refuses to return them.
