Government Freezes Plans For Kasteli Airport
Transport and Infrastructure Minister Dimitris Reppas recently announced the cancellation of the tender for the construction and management of the new airport on Crete in the Kastelli area that was introduced by the previous government in 2009.
According to Mr. Reppas, problems were cited with radio beacon signals for the specific site as well as local opposition.
The minister announced that the project would be up for re-tendering in the summer of 2010.
The former Ministry of Environment, Physical Planning and Public Works had announced the tender for the Kasteli airport last September. The Kasteli airport is to replace the existing Nikos Kazantzakis Airport located in Heraklio.
